Convoy is a traditional Maidwell game played by the whole school once a year. It is based on the Second World War Atlantic Convoys and the aim is for merchantmen (younger boys) to score points for their team by completing circuits of all 5 ports without being sunk by submarines. The key to succcess is to have well organised frigates to protect against the submarines, but frigates have to beware of the aircraft carriers. Of course a merchantman may be disguised as a 'Q Ship' ! The game is played in one of the school fields on a Sunday afternoon, and this year Ash and Beech were the winning team; the first time that Ash has won for quite a while. It was a lovely sunny day which made for one of the best Convoy games recently played. |
