Match v Stamford
Wednesday, 17th March 2010

Won 3.5 - 2.5

The top VI Seniors went to Stamford in what we hoped would be the closest match we had played after two interestingly one-sided matches in the past.

We achieved a win courtesy of the courts being passed over to a squash club and James Cleverly needing to leave his court while drawing. Ignacio came up against a very good squash playing 14 year old boy and physically and ability they were evenly matched - it was a good lesson for him to try and keep his head. Alex Webb and Ed Spooner saw off their opponents and Javier Cerezo showed real guts to come back to win his match. Will Playne stuck to his task and got better but it wasn't quite his day and James came back to 2-2 only to have to vacate the court. Most boys had the opportunity to play other players on an informal basis as well. A good end to a pleasing season.

Ignacio Danobeitia 0-3 lost
Alex Webb 3-0 won
Edward Spooner 3-0 won
James Cleverly 2-2 drew
Javier Cerezo 3-1 won
William Playne 0-3 lost

Match v Bedford
Monday, 15th March, 2010

Maidwell Juniors won 15-9
Maidwell Seniors lost 7-17

Overall Maidwell lost 22-26

The B VI's in both parts of the school travelled to Bedford and acquitted themselves very well. We had a few injuries and absentees so our team was a little different to the one intended. We played the same system of each boy playing two matches of two games with American scoring upto 11. It worked very well and the Juniors were comfortable winners 15-9. However, the Seniors struggled against some good players and went down disappointingly 7-17.

Match v Bedford
Monday, 8th February, 2010

We played a slightly different scoring system to enable all boys to play two different people. Each match was over just two games, American scoring and up to 11 points, thus meaning each match would be won 1-0 or halved.

When each boy played their corresponding seeds the scores were

Seniors 4.5-1.5 win
Juniors 4.5-1.5 win

However, the scores were slightly different when the seeds were swapped around a little.

Seniors 4-2 win
Juniors 2-4 lost

Therefore the overall score was:

15-9 win to Maidwell

The performances from both teams were very good. Most of the Seniors had to battle very hard against similar competition and in all cases the final game was the decider. The Juniors were playing older pupils and they all played very well.

Match v Stamford U14/U13
Tuesday, 1st December ,2009

Result:  Lost 0 - 10

Last year I went over to Stamford for the first ever squash fixture between the two schools. We were far too strong then and won comfortably 10-0, only dropping two games in the whole afternoon.

However, this time our unbeaten run came to a dramatic end with the absolute reversal of last year. We tried very hard against a mixed team of U14 and U13 but they were far too strong. Only Alex Webb and Edward Ashton Johnson took a single game off their opponent. Each boy had opportunities at times to gain the upper hand, ut it just wasn't happening for us on the day.

Now that the fixture is established we can finally guage the level of our teams for future fixtures.

Team:

Alex Webb
Edward Spooner
William Playne
Javier Cerezo

Match v Winchester House
Thursday, 26th November 2009

Having toiled valiantly but in vain against Winchester House over the last 3 years, it is now really pleasing to have posted a won over their Senior Squash team, especially as two of our top five players (James Cleverly and Ignacio Danobeitia) were injured or ill. Well done to all the boys and a big thank you to Mr Owens and Mr Schofield for being in charge in my absence.

U11 Squash v Bedford
Thursday, 5th November, 2009

Ten Form III boys travelled over to Bedford for a fixture on their excellent squash facility of four courts and a balcony over.

Bedford's team was a mixture of boys from different year groups, some older and younger, but mostly the same age.

All the boys performed well and we won 9 out of 10 matches. In fact we only lost two games in the whole afternoon.

Well done to all.  We won 9 - 1 as follows:

Senior Squash v Oakham
Thursday, 8th October, 2009

Ten boys and I travelled over to Oakham for the first fixture of the year.

Our first four seeds all played older boys following a request from Oakham and they all competed well, given that skill levels were almost the same. However, they found the extra strength and size difficult to deal with.

However, it was great to see seeds 5-10 win against Oakham's seeds 1-6 for their age group, highlighting the good strength in depth we have here. Milo Cook and Edward Ashton Johnson both had to come from behind to win their matches and Sam Boscawen competed well against older competition.

Results:

Edward Spooner 1-9, 5-9, 5-9 lost
Alex Webb 7-10, 9-6, 1-9, 9-5, 9-6 won
James Cleverly 10-8, 4-9, 6-9, 2-6 ret.
William Playne 0-9, 6-9, 6-9 lost
Milo Cook 6-9, 9-7, 9-6 won
Edward Ashton Johnson 6-9, 9-7, 9-5 won
Nick Bell 9-3, 7-9, 9-3 won
Edward Fenner 9-5, 9-2, 9-3 won
Sam Boscawen 9-4, 9-2, 9-2 won
Charlie Chamberlayne 9-3, 9-2, 9-3 won

Overall, a result of 7-3 in matches and 19-13 in games won

Well done to all and a big thank you for all the parental and grand-parental support.
