V Bedford Prep

Maidwell 0  Bedford 31

On Wednesday the 10th of September, with only three training sessions under their belt, Maidwell's 3rd XV came up against a strong Bedford under 12 'C' team. The first half started was very untidy for Maidwell, with poor handling in the back line and lack of commitment at the break down by the forwards. This led Bedford to a 3 try lead by half time.

In the second half Maidwell pulled their socks up and put their heads into the game. They started playing much better rugby and some fantastic tackling was displayed; Maidwell only conceded two tries. Considering the lack of preparation time, Maidwell played very well. Special mentions must go to Luke Marchant and Edmund Wells for their fantastic defensive play.

V Oakham

Maidwell 17 Oakham 63

On Wednesday the 17th September the Mighty Maidwell 3rd's played a well drilled Oakham Under U12C team. Maidwell started the game with some very sloppy play. A combination of the forward's lack of desire for the ball and the backline's poor tackling efforts, led to a 6 try lead for Oakham at the half. In the second half, however, Maidwell pulled their heads in and started to play some good rugby. Fantastic rucking and mauling by the forwards lead to Maidwell scoring 2 tries. The back line began passing the ball more and running into the tackles with emphisis which led to another fantastic try. Unfortunately the final score was 11 tries to 3, but the score does not represent the boys' fantastic efforts in the second half. They are improving quickly and should achieve some good results in the coming games.

Spratton Hall vs Maidwell 3rds A & B

Match 1:  Spratton 30 - 55 Maidwell Hall A
Match 2:  Maidwell Hall A - N/A - Maidwell Hall B
Match 3:  Spratton 25 - 30 Maidwell Hall B

First Match
Due to a lack of numbers the third team played in a sevens round robin.  Maidwell providing two teams to Spratton's single team.  The first match, played on a steep slope, provided a good test for Maidwell although by the second half Spratton had been limited to break away tries by their fantastically quick winger.  A rather comfortable win in which Edmund Wells in particular shone for Maidwell.

Second Match
This was a rather strange fixture between Maidwell A's & B's - our A team being rather exhausted from their previous exertions!  Two of our better players were substituted to allow others a game and quite a fierce game commenced while Spratton rested.  With various changes the B's came out on top, although due to time restrictions the match was a single half.

Third Match
There was a slight concern that the B team would have worn themselves out against the A's but in retrospect, playing two matches in a row seemed to work in our favour. The B's started well, Henry Chamberlayne taking charge of a number of dangerous situations and they managed to run in a number of tries down the hill.  George Holborow deserves note too for some impressive wing play.  The second half inevitably proved troublesome and things were very tight at the end, but Maidwell triumphed with a last minute score.

A rather strange fixture - but well done to Maidwell who battled well, played with a great attitude and team spirit and seemed to at last apply some of the hard work from their training sessions!
