This was always going to be a tough first match of the season against a powerful and physical Bedford Prep side. Although Maidwell stuck to their tasks, the size difference proved to be insurmountable and the final score reflected the domination Bedford had in all areas of the pitch.

This was a really spirited performance from the boys, a great team effort. I was very proud of them especially as it would have been easy for them to let their heads drop after the Bedford game on Wednesday. The tackling was much improved and it was a great feeling to score our first tries of the season, with Tom Buxton and Toby Duncan going over after some sustained pressure in opposition territory. I said to them afterwards that we had, in effect, drawn two tries apiece, and that it is important now to learn from the things we did well today and take the positives into next week's game against Stamford.

Maidwell 7 Stamford 49
The old cliche of a game of 2 halves rang true for this match. The first half was a display of solid running rugby by Stamford who chalked up 42 unanswered points.
To their credit the Maidwell boys played like a different team in the second half and actually drew the half 7-7. Ben Clarke scored the try and kicked the conversion in a performance which showed that with a bit of confidence we can match it with the physically bigger sides we shall face this season.

V Bilton Grange

This is a rather disappointing result as the game was there for the taking. Having taken a well deserved 7 - 0 lead the team played very well in places but poor tackling was again the downfall and we conceded 2 soft tries before half time. The second half was rather scrappy with the bigger Bilton forwards controlling more of the play although Maidwell scored the best try of the day. The boys will take heart from the positive aspects of this match and know they have to work even harder throughout the rest of the season. Max Weatherby scored both tries and Ben Clarke kicked both conversions.

V Stoneygate

This was a much better performance by the team who, unfortunately, went down by the one try. The reshuffled forward pack performed better as a unit and shared an equal amount of ball with Stoneygate. The backs ran strongly and scored 2 good tries through Max Weatherby and Guy Seddon, his first for Maidwell. Ben Clarke added both conversions. There was much to admire in this performance and showed the improvement every player has made this term.

V S. Anselm's

This result has been a long time coming and was richly deserved against a bigger S. Anselm's side. The forwards played magnificently as a pack and won good clean ball dominating all phases of the game. The backs ran hard and straight setting up some exciting moments throughout the match. Max Weatherby and Henry Pegley scored the tries, with Max converting them both.

Match 2 - Maidwell 26 Spratton B 0
Spratton very kindly agreed to bring 2 teams for this fixture. In the first half we played their A side and although we competed very well for 15 minutes, Spratton scored 4 tries by using their big runners out wide. The second half was against their B side and tries from Alexander Webb, Max Weatherby, Charlie Chamberlayne and Harry McGrath and 3 conversions from Max saw us home by 26 points to 0.

This was a very disappointing performance. The side missed the drive of Harry McGrath who was ill just before the match and could not play. Swanbourne played more direct rugby and although Maidwell had a good share of possesion could not
do anything constructive with the ball.

This was a very much improved performance against a strong school. The introduction of 4 U10 players made a significant difference to the tackling and the general team performance. The score did not reflect the game as Maidwell competed strongly throughout the match. A soft try in the last minute ruined an impressive all round display.

This is the most comprehensive win this group of boys has had since they joined the school. Seven tries were scored in an excellent team performance that saw good combination between the forwards and the backs. Tries were scored by Tom Buxton, Charlie Chamberlayne, Max Weatherby [2], Ben Clarke, Harry McGrath and Alexander Webb. Ben and Max alternated the kicking duties, Ben kicking 4 conversions and Max 3.
