Match Reports

Maidwell 5  Witham Hall 1

It was nice to start the season with a resounding win. George Henderson grabbed a hat-trick and William Duncan scored twice but everyone contributed. There were notably good displays from Alfie Farr whose distribution was intelligent in midfield and young Monty Fenwicke-Clennell who showed maturity beyond his years at the back. Freddie Peppiatt saved a penalty when the score was only 2-0. I think we can pass the ball better but it was a very satisfying way in which to kick off the new campaign.

Maidwell 1  Stoneygate 0

Even though the margin of victory was much narrower, this was, in a way, a more satisfying result than Saturday. Against more talented opposition, I was delighted with the manner in which the team defended from the front. The boys worked their socks off, scrapping for every ball and not allowing Stoneygate any space. George Henderson grabbed the only goal of the game on the stroke of half-time with a well-taken left-foot finish. The second half was all about protecting the lead. Tom Worrall and later Alfie Farr both did brilliant man-marking jobs on the Stoneygate dangerman. In injury time he eluded their attention for the only time in the game and his right-foot shot looked to be curling inside the top corner only for keeper Fred Peppiatt to turn it round the post brilliantly to ensure we held on for the win.

Maidwell 9  Bedford 0

This was a mis-match from the start. To be fair to Bedford, their sporting focus this term is hockey so we were not playing against their best footballers. Nevertheless, our boys did a professional job and in the first-half, (before some positional tinkering which made for a scrappy second period), they played some good attacking football. Harry Chubb (5), George Henderson (2), William Duncan and Monty Fenwicke-Clennell got the goals.

Maidwell 0  Wellingborough 2

We made a disappointingly slow start to this game during which we were guilty of being outfought by our visitors and perhaps fortunate to be only one-nil down at the break. The second half was a big improvement and with a bit of luck we might have grabbed the all-important next goal. Harry Chubb went closest with a terrific long-range shot which cannoned back off the bar. With Maidwell throwing bodies forward in search of an equaliser however, it was Wellingborough who scored again after a fine counter-attacking move. It was obviously a blow to lose our unbeaten record but the second half performance at least gave us momentum going into our next match.
