The 2008 Season

Winchester House          1st VI              Lost
  Colts IV Lost

Great Houghton 1st VI Won
  Colts IV Won

Spratton Hall 1st IV Won
  Colts IV Drew

Our first match of the term was against Winchester House. This was the first time we had ever played them and they turned out to be very strong and match fit, having played throughout the winter. Our team was very rusty. The senior pairs improved massively during the afternoon and by the end were giving the opposition some reasonable competition. Our colts pairs had a closer contest but the Winchester House first pair were very good. Overall we lost decisively, but it was a most enjoyable fixture which we are keen to repeat next year.

Our second match was against Great Houghton on a day when rain threatened to disrupt play. The Great Houghton grass courts had been affected by rain during the previous few days and were not playing well so we used the hard courts and played single sets only. Our senior players dominated the opposition and won easily. Our colts pairs were a little inconsistent and at the end were tied in sets; the match was decided in our favour on game difference.

Our final match of the season was against Spratton Hall. Our senior pairs began the match in casual style and looked like losing their first encounters. However, they pulled back from 0-4 and 2-4 down to win their first matches in intelligent style and their second matches were more straightforward leading to a 4-0 victory. The Spratton colts first pair was outstanding and instrumental in creating a 2-2 draw for the colts. We enjoyed the fixture which lapsed last year and we look forward to continuing it next year with more pairs involved.

Jack Gray captained the team and he and Ignacio Morenes were impressive at 1st pair playing some powerful tennis and working well together as a pair. Archie Bowlby and Valentine Taylor became increasingly effective at second pair and at 3rd pair the solid Tancred Taylor (with another season in hand) complimented Refael Calero's flashes of brilliance. At the colts level Milo Cook and Charlie Chamberlayne (still in Form IV) emerged as the stronger pair but Nick Bell and James Cleverly became more consistent as the season progressed.

Leavers and Mothers Doubles Tennis Tournament

Wednesday, July 4th 2007

Fourteen mothers of leaving boys entered this year and were fortunate that despite some heavy showers all matches were completed.  With a large field we borrowed some additional courts in Brixworth.  All pairs were placed in ‘round robin’ pools, with the winner of each group to qualify.   The standard across the board was noticeably higher this year and there were some excellent matches.  The Maidwell group winners were the Brooks’ who looked comfortable and the FitzRoys who came through two very close encounters.  On the Brixworth courts many matches were fairly even, indeed in one group all three pairs won a match, with the Cunninghams ultimately successful on game difference.  The Eayrs combination won two tighter matches than the scoreline suggested.

After an enjoyable late lunch the semi finals were played with quite a crowd on the bank.  The Brooks pair looked ominously strong, winning their match without conceding a game. On the other court there was a terrific tussle with the FitzRoys edging out the Eayrs 4-3.  The final was played in good humour and despite a brief interlude for rain, the match was won comfortably by the Brooks combination. It will be a few years before as strong a pair is seen in this competition again. An enjoyable day, thanks to all fourteen pairs for taking part and braving the weather.
