V Bedford Prep Maidwell 12 Bedford 19 We travelled to Bedford to play their U12A team after only a limited number of training sessions. We started slowly and Bedford put us under a lot of pressure, evenutally scoring a try. However, our forwards started to dominate up front and, by half-time, Harry Chetwode's try saw us trail 5-7. The same was true in the second half and after a Bedford try Ignacio Garcia scored his first try in his first competitive rugby match. Henry Pratt managed the conversion to make it 12-12. Sadly towards the end we could not convert our pressure into a try and our fitness levels went off somewhat and poor tackling led to a Bedford try. Still this was a very strong performance and bodes well for the rest of term.

V Oakham
Maidwell 25 Oakham 34
This was an extremely frustrating game. We started off so well and for most of the first half, we were camped in the Oakham half, eventually scoring through Kai Sampo. Oakham hit back just before half time to make the score 5-5. The first five minutes of the second half was the craziest spell of rugby I have ever seen. We went to sleep and allowed Oakham to score 24 unanswered points. Only then did we start to play again and the last 15 minutes were very productive with us winning this mini battle 20-5 - two tries each for Ignacio Garcia and Angus Norman. But it was far too late. There is much work in defence to do and the older boys need to step up and start to make the correct decisions in matches.

V Stoneygate
Maidwell 27 Stoneygate 17
We started the game brilliantly and had scored 2 tries in 15 minutes. We couldn't press on, however, and our execution near the try line was very poor. Stoneygate came back with a try early in the second half, but then we produced the best passage of team play of the term so far with 17 points in 8 minutes. I then changed the team around a lot and a lack of organisation allowed Stoneygate to score 12 more points - something they very much deserved.

V Oundle
Maidwell 36 Oundle 5
The best performance of the season so far. The boys looked fit and worked hard for each other. Making the right decision when in the oppositions 22 was still a problem, however. We led 12-0 at half time and had the majority of possession. However, in the second half, we got the ball out to the backs more and some powerful running and good support led to four more good tries. It was slightly annoying to allow Oundle to score at the end, but they battled hard for this. Hopefully, this victory will help push us on for Saturday's crunch match.

V Spratton Hall
Maidwell 17 Spratton 5
Brilliant!! There are not enough superlatives to describe this performance. Maidwell dominated from start to finish, buoyed on by excellent parental support. Going in at 5-5 at halftime after dominating almost all the half, I was fearing another Oakham-style capitulation. But the forwards were immense, winning so much opposition ball and Henry Pratt's wind-assisted punts put Spratton on the back foot. The tries were scored by Bullard, Bell and Pratt and all the team are to be congratualted for this excellent performance and keeping their patience and temperament against a very feisty Spratton team.

V Great Houghton
Maidwell 54 Great Houghton 29
This was a U12 A/B 10-a-side game as requested by the opposition. Playing on the Colts pitch there was a lot of space hence the score line. We led 36-10 at half time and the second half saw us finish with a completely different team from the start. The performance from those boys who have been training with the 3rd team was very encouraging.

V Beachborough
Maidwell 55 Beachborough 0
This was a very one-sided game as the scoreline suggests. We dominated from start to finish and ran in 9 tries altogether with 3 each for Ignacio Garcia and Louis Hilton. There was some very pleasing forward play and some strong running from the backs, although it would have been better to have seen more drawing of defenders before passing. The team has some tough fixtures ahead so this was a good confidence-booster!!

V Bilton Grange
Maidwell 27 Bilton 7
We were expecting a much more difficult game than the previous week and Bilton had some very big lads to contend with. We were the dominant side from the start and led 10-0 at half-time. However, our performance was not hugely inspring, especially our handling and tackling. The second half was much more satisfying with the forwards winning good ball and more effective play in the backs. We scored 3 more tries including the Ignacio's hat-trick and a 60 metre run from Kai Sampo.

V Swanbourne
Maidwell 41 Swanbourne 0
This was by far the most pleasing all-round performance of the season. The forwards dominated from the start and our scrum was excellent, winning so much ball against the head. We led 17-0 at half-time and had to wait about ten minutes for a score in the second half, where we allowed Swanbourne to have a lot of possession. The tries were scored by Ignacio (2), Harry Chetwode, Henry Pratt, Charlie Fletcher, Jack Weatherby and a 50-metre run through about 10 defenders by Louis Hilton. |
