Mathematics

Mathematics at Maidwell addresses the need for all pupils to master the essential skills, to stretch the mind and to enjoy the many interesting and exciting facets of this important subject. The basis for the programme of study is the Common Entrance syllabus. In the lower years, up to year six (11+), the content of the CE syllabus is kept although broken down according to the National Curriculum. Given that there are two different levels tested in the final year, differentiation is applied within each year group. Scholarship preparation is approached on an individual basis, which frequently benefits other pupils as well.

Emphasis is placed on a thorough grounding, while developing investigative minds capable of problem solving.  Although it is necessary to learn and repeatedly apply basic procedures, the importance of understanding along  the way is considered vital for the progression and development of mathematical knowledge.

The Mathematics Department expects high standards on a daily basis, which creates a platform for consistently good Common Entrance results.  Success is also achieved in the annual national Mathematical Challenges in which many of our pupils participate.  Furthermore, this year the entire school thoroughly enjoyed taking part in fund-raising on the NSPCC Numberday.

These objectives are put into practice by a well-qualified staff of five, who regularly meet to monitor pupils’ progress.  Effective resources include Interactive Whiteboards, providing exciting and stimulating alternatives to the teaching programme.  There is a very strong Learning Support Department dedicated to improving the understanding and achievement of the weaker pupils.  In addition Maths Clinics are held daily for any extra help needed (at any level) on an individual basis.
